Howard, Clayton are my choices for LD 27
Glendale reader: State House, Senate candidates will listen, make informed decisions
By Julie Skrzypek | Glendale
OPINION — “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!” Or is it “Knowledge is power?” It’s a bit of both. I felt uneasy telling people what I did for a living. At parties, “What do you do?” Me: “I am a public high school English teacher.” Reaction: “Oh … I hated English.” “Really?”
We use English daily, yet those who teach it are sometimes seen as “judgy.” Some scoff at academic knowledge. Some try to be a “good ol’ boy” to appeal to voters. As for me, I don’t fear knowledgeable, intelligent people; I rely on them.
That’s how it is during election season. I read the voter guide and focus on candidates within my district. Do they have academic knowledge, practical experience and a strong work ethic? Can I count on them to do necessary research to cast sound votes in the state Legislature?
I don’t expect my state legislators to know it all, but I want to feel confident in their decision-making skills. Will they look beyond party-line choices? Will they be persistent about getting the needed facts? Are they humble enough to research, ask questions and listen actively to others to determine what’s best for our state?
I rarely second-guess my physician’s diagnosis. I’ve watched “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Chicago Med,” but neither imparts the necessary knowledge to make an informed decision. Even Doctor Google makes mistakes!
The bottom line is that knowledge of government and Arizonans’ concerns is paramount in the 2026 midterms. I’ll vote for people who are willing to listen, learn and legislate. In Legislative District 27, Deborah Howard for state representative and Kyle Clayton for state Senate are two hard-working candidates able and willing to dig deep and make informed decisions.
Both are well-educated, good listeners and care about the future of all Arizonans. Please vote and vote wisely.
