Gun Violence Prevention
Every Arizonan deserves to feel safe going about their daily life - dropping the kids off at schools, headed to the store, or church, or a concert, without worrying about gun violence shattering their family and their community. I will advocate for common sense gun laws to protect children, families, and communities from the angst of ever having to have another politician send thoughts and prayers after a PREVENTABLE tragedy.
Gun violence is
a public health issue - Guns are the leading cause of death among children and teens in our state. In an average year, 1,290 Arizonans die from gun violence including both homicides and suicide. This is not an acceptable status quo.
a economic issue - gun deaths and injuries cost Arizona $15.9 billion each year - a societal cost of more than $2,000 per every Arizonan each year.
a criminal justice issue - through background checks more than 3.5 million illegal guns have been confiscated.
We can, and will, do better. We can fund community-based violence intervention programs, encourage secure gun storage practices, and enact legislation to reduce gun violence. This includes closing loopholes in background checks, safe storage laws to prevent unsupervised child access to firearms, and expansion of laws to keep guns out of the hands of those recently convicted of violent crimes such as assault and battery, or sexual battery.
